"All in One"
Radio/Phono battery radio, acoustical phono
(wind-up) with a battery operated radio
Radio
is a Ware model AA (a rare piece itself)
From my collection, this was a piece that I sought after for
many years. I finally found it in Portland, OR in 1984 in an
antique shop. The phonograph worked just fine when I found it and
still does. I never tried the radio until recently when I decided
to allow someone else to adopt it. Fine pieces like this deserve
adoption. I found the radio inoperative because of a defective
transformer which had previously been replaced. After replacing
it, the radio now works.
This is smaller than the typical console phonograph of this style
and period, smaller and more compact.
The finish is very good and 100% original with only a few minor
scratches & blems. When I purchased this 23 years ago, it was very
clean and I did nothing to it except place it in my radio room. So
prior to offering this piece for sale, I removed the radio & phono
mechanism for inspection and cleaning. To my surprise I did not
find the usual gobs of dust dirt and crud in the hidden
places where normal house hold cleaning is not accessible.
Everything was exceptionally clean. This piece was obviously well
cared for all the years prior to my ownership in a very clean
home.
This is really a fine and rare piece especially in this condition.
The promo brochure (which I also have) refers to this as the "All
in One", a complete home entertainment center featuring the phono
and radio. A unique feature of the phono is it will play all three
78 RPM record formats that were common during that period; Edison,
Pathe' & the standard format. This is done by the pick-up head
which is designed the be set at the proper angel to the record
surface (see photo's).
Another great feature is the phono's built-in wood horn speaker is
also used to hear the radio sound by means of an adaptor that is
stored in a hidden compartment. You simply remove the phono
pick-up head and attach the radio speaker driver to the end of the
acoustical phono arm (see photo's).
