Before multiplex stereo was the norm, there was "simulcast" stereo. That is one channel was broadcast on AM, the other channel on FM. The above is an excellent representative of one of those tuners. Not cheaply built (as were some), this one is actually two individual tuners mounted together. Each tuner is power transformer operated, they share nothing but the front panel. The front panel frame is not flimsy plastic, rather a heavy metal casting.

The AM tuner features tuned RF, converter, two IF amplifiers, detector and AVC.

The FM tuner has tuned RF, osc/converter, two IFs, limiter, AF amplifier, AVC and a EM84, florescent tuning indicator. As with all the Stromberg-Carlson equipment that I've had experience with, these tuners are excellent performers.
