Sylvania Advertising clock, CA: early 1950s

An original "Big Time" advertising clock (of Cincinnati, Ohio) that I have restored. When found the bubble lens was missing as well as the retainer ring. Neither are available for replacement as with the PAM clocks. So I improvised, the original bubble lens was made of plastic and the retainer ring a bit larger than the PAM clocks. So with a little effort  I made the PAM ring fit with only a slight gap at the top. The PAM glass bubble lens fits just fine.

Afterwards I found the motor did not run and carefully repaired it.  After compete assembly I found the time set function only partially worked because of a partially stripped gear which I could not fix. I then replaced the motor with the good ole reliable PAM motor. I also replaced the power cord and fitted it with LEDs. It now looks great, keeps good time and should run another 65  years.

One minor caveat, the face is original and it too is made of plastic but not he same type of plastic my replica clock faces are made of. The face  has three tiny hairline fractures extending out a short distance from the center hole (see photo). They are visible only with a close-up inspection. I do not expect they will grow any larger as it is obvious that they have been there a long-long time. I suspect the damage was caused by over tightening the center retainer nut which was part of the original motor. The replacement motor does not have such a mounting stud. Some dealers would not even mention such a minor thing, but I am not some.

After all this work I'm not sure I should call it  original as only the body, face and light sockets are original. It is a beautiful, original looking clock that's ready to complement your shop or radio room wall.
